Dan Wolken Leaves Commercial Appeal for Murdoch’s Daily iPad Newspaper

Today is the last day that Dan Wolken will be writing for the Memphis Commercial Appeal.  He is moving to New York City to join the staff at Rupert Murdoch’s “Daily” iPad digital newspaper scheduled to launch in January.  Wolken has been a Sports Enterprise Columnist with a focus on the Memphis Tigers for the CA.  And about a year ago he was hired by 730 Fox Sports to host a radio sports talk show.

The above  WKNO-TV’s Sports Files with Geoff Calkins video of the Wolken interview gives some of the details of Wolken’s new job, his thoughts on the future of newspapers and Mid-South sports.  At the “Daily”, he will be a national sports columnist according to this interview.

Mediaverse says, “Dan Wolken, who parlayed his Tiger Basketball beat into sports enterprise columnist position, has once again parlayed that into a new position–in New York, for Rupert Murdoch’s ipad only newspaper.  He leaves at month’s end.  He joined the CA in 2007.

According to the New York Times, “With an investment of $30 million and a staff of around 100, The Daily will be the first of a kind €” a €œnewspaper€ with rich media and photography built especially for the iPad.”

A News Corp website – All Things Digital – reports, “It will come out daily, it will sell for 99 cents a week, it will use lots of video and it will have cool multimedia bells and whistles, including some kind of 3-D effect that lots of people are very excited about.”

Wishing him much success with the new gig in NYC!
