Memphis Advertising Federation awarded the Silver Medal, their highest honor, to Art Gilliam, president and CEO of  WLOK-AM 1340, yesterday.  The Commercial Appeal story says, “Gilliam, who was just 16 when he enrolled at Yale to pursue a degree in economics, made local history in 1977 when he bought WLOK. In so doing, Gilliam became the first African-American to own a Memphis radio station and made WLOK the city’s first locally owned station.”
